In-app payment support arrives on Android

Right on cue, Google has launched in-app payment support for Android applications. Developer testing began last week, and now many popular apps — like the ones pictured above — can begin charging users for add-on functionality, content, or whatever the heck else they feel is worthy of additional bits of your pocket change. If you were wondering, Google will take the same 30% cut that Apple takes from in-app purchases.

At last we can buy individual issues in Comics with minimal fuss!

OmmWriter brings its clean, calm writing interface to Windows

ommwriter

I have a thing for full-screen text editing. I use WriteMonkey for my creative writing needs, and VIM in a full-screen PuTTY session for my Web development work. That being the case, I’m all over the monospace, dark-background, focused editing scene.

OmmWriter attempts to take that aesthetic and make it somehow more spiritual, with three picturesque backgrounds and ambient background audio tracks (there are seven of each in the paid version).

I’m of two minds about this app. On the one hand, yes, it’s beautiful. But if you want music as a background to your writing, why not pick your own soundtrack with Winamp or Foobar2000 running in the background?

OmmWriter also offers three keyboard-clicking sounds, which are kind of nice. None of these features are groundbreaking, really. OmmWriter could be seen as a way to gently ease into the world of distraction-free writing — in case something like WriteMonkey’s dark background is just too oppressive for you.

After the fold you can see a video showcasing several of OmmWriter’s features and creative soundscapes.

ASUS Transformer Prime bootloader unlock now available

ASUS Transformer Prime

As promised, the bootloader unlock tool for the ASUS Transformer Prime is now available for download from ASUS directly. It's a simple little .apk that you'll download, move to your tablet and install, and it will set in motion the ability to rock custom ROMs and basically mod to you heart's content. Note that you'll need to have the Ice Cream Sandwich update installed, but you've already done that, we hope.

The flip side is by doing so, you're basically absolving ASUS of any responsibility should you break something. Or, as ASUS puts it, "You also acknowledge ASUS does not guarantee service satisfaction to any Revised Product." We love it when you talk all sexy-like, ASUS.

Hit up the download link below to get going.

Barnes & Noble offers to repartition Nook Tablet storage, concedes you may need more than 1GB

Nook Tablet

Are you one of the many infuriated with Barnes & Noble over how it partitioned the storage on the Nook Tablet — leaving you just 1GB for you own files? Well, it looks like the company has learned from its mistakes. While only about 5GB is free to load with apps and media on the new 8GB model, just 1GB of that is reserved for Nook Store content. B&N is also offering to retroactively fix the 16GB boondoggle as well. If you visit a brick and mortar shop starting March 12th, a support rep will gladly help you repartition the internal storage, freeing up more than just one of the 13 available gigabytes for personal use. Having to bring it to the store is a bit of pain, but we suppose it’s better that getting stuck with 12GB of Angry Birds and e-books.

Qualcomm’s fifth gen Gobi unveiled, supports a Lollapalooza of LTE, 2G / 3G bands

Qualcomm this morning took the wraps off the fifth generation of its Gobi reference platform, which offers up LTE via FDD and TDD networks. It also plays nicely with past favorites, including the likes of HSPA+ and EV-DO, keeping your globe trotting self connected on that skinny laptop, tablet or convertible. The reference platform is designed to work with Windows 8 and Android devices and a number of processors, including, naturally, the San Diego-based company’s own dual- and quad-core Snapdragons and good old x86. More information and lots of quotes from big name companies who think the bouncing new baby Gobi is just swell after the break.

Microsoft says Office for iPad story is based on ‘inaccurate rumors and speculation’ (updated)

The Daily got a lot of folks hopes up earlier today with a rumor that Office would soon be making an appearance on the iPad, but Microsoft is now throwing a bit of cold water on that news. While it’s not exactly an outright denial that such an app is coming, a Microsoft spokesperson has now told The New York Times’ Bits website that “The Daily story is based on inaccurate rumors and speculation,” adding only that it has “no further comment” at this time. ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley, however, is further reporting that Microsoft is specifically saying that the screenshot accompanying The Daily’s story is not a real picture of a Microsoft product.

Update: For its part, The Daily is standing by its story. Editor Peter Ha posted a reply to Foley on Twitter, stating that “we did not fabricate either image. A working version of the app was demoed to us by someone at Microsoft.”

Update 2: Microsoft has chimed in yet again on the matter, this time in the form of a tweet that reads: “Great respect for The Daily but regrettably someone is giving them bad info, and that’ll be clear in the ‘coming weeks.’” Yes, they put “coming weeks” in quotes themselves.

Initial Snapdragon S4 benchmarks show promising performance

Android Central

It's not often we get excited about benchmark numbers, but we'll make an exception today. Early benchmarks of the first chips based upon Qualcomm's new Snapdragon S4 ("Krait") architecture have appeared, showing dramatic improvements from earlier Snapdragon chips. The tests run by AnandTech on Qualcomm's S4 Mobile Development Platform (powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core MSM8960 chip), show single and mutli-threaded CPU performance dwarfing earlier models. This includes TI OMAP chips used in phones like the Galaxy Nexus and Droid RAZR, as well as the much-vaunted 1.2GHz Exynos chip in the Galaxy S II.

The chip produced leading web benchmark scores too, according to AnandTech's results. The site recorded its lowest (best) SunSpider Javascript score with Qualcomm's new MDP, at just 1532 in the stock Android 4.0 browser. And graphical tests on the MSM8960's Adreno 225 GPU were almost as impressive, with Qualcomm's MDP being beaten by the iPhone 4S and Galaxy S II in just a couple of GPU tests.

So the MSM8960 is shaping up to be an impressive chip indeed. We're expecting to see it in a number of mid-range and high-end devices this year, including HTC's "Ville" (rumored to ship as the HTC One S).  We'll no doubt hear more about this chip, and the devices it'll be powering, at MWC next week.

How to check for water damage before purchasing a used iPhone 4

“Checking for water damage is pretty simple and something everyone should do before forking over your hard earned cash for a second-hand iPhone 4.”

If you’re trying to save some money and are in the market to purchase a used iPhone 4 from either Craigslist, eBay, or some other local or online seller, one of the first things you’ll want to do is check for any signs of water damage. I see several people in my office each week that purchased used iPhones that mysteriously quit working after a few days. As much as we’d like to believe there aren’t people out there who would sell us broken or water damaged devices, it happens every day.

Apple’s and Motorola’s Slip-Slidey Patent Scrap

A regional court in Munich, Germany, has ruled that most of Motorola Mobility’s smartphone products infringe on Apple’s slide-to-unlock image patent. Users of Apple’s iOS devices slide a virtual button across the screen in order to “unlock” the device — in other words, wake it up and make it ready to accept other input. It’s meant to prevent so-called pocket dials on the device’s touch-sensitive screen.

Mac OS X Lion Preview 2 released, introduces mega exciting leather bound iCal skin

This is one of those posts that could probably be condensed into a tweet: Apple has released the second Preview of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. If you’re running Preview 1, it looks like you’ll first receive a small update via Software Update, and then you can download Preview 2 from the Mac App Store.

There has been some speculation that Apple is getting close to a release or Golden Master build, but judging by 9to5 Mac’s initial findings there’s definitely some way to go. The Golden Master will probably appear at, or just before, the Apple WWDC in June.

So far, it’s looking like the only changes in Preview 2 are the leather bound iCal skin that you can see above, and the main iChat window now combines your AIM, Bonjour and Jabber contacts, like Adium. We’re sure that more details will emerge throughout the day, though, and there’s bound to be lots of invisible changes, too. We’ll update this post when we find out more.

Line Grapefruit is a tricky Flash “path” game

linegrapefruit

Okay, see that snaking line coming in from the right on the screenshot? That’s you. And see those large round circles? Those are supposedly grapefruits, only they won’t sit still – they keep moving up and down and cutting across your path. And if you touch one, you die!

That’s what you have to deal with in Line Grapefruit. But that’s not all – you’re also on a time limit. In fact, you have a very limited amount of time to make it through the “path” (for lack of a better word). You need to snake your way through the winding trail without touching anything. The good news is that a grapefruit only kills you if it touches the end of the line – once you’ve made it past the grapefruit, nothing happens if it crosses the path you’ve made.

This is not an easy game, but it’s quite unique – I can’t recall seeing another game quite like it.

Google Cloud Print comes to HP ePrint printers

hp google cloud print

HP has become the first major OEM to deliver support for Google Cloud Print in retail-boxed printers. In an official release, HP announced that its ePrint-enabled printers are now fully Cloud Print compatible. Just sign in to your Google account, pick your HP ePrint device, and you’re ready to fire off a print job from anywhere you’ve got Internet access. Well, as long as your app supports Cloud Print as well — like Gmail and Google Docs, for example.

We’re curious, though — how many of you are still printing? Like our pals at Engadget, our printers have been mostly gathering dust for the last few years.

Microsoft details SkyDrive overhaul, Windows 8 app and desktop sync in tow (Update: video)

We heard whispers of SkyDrive desktop applications a few days ago. Today, Microsoft confirmed just that alongside a Metro-style offering for Windows 8 and other improvements to its cloud storage tech. In a post on the Building Windows 8 blog, the outfit discusses file sync via desktop app for easy drag-and-drop use — much like we’ve become used to with Dropbox. The overhaul will support 2GB max file uploads through Windows Explorer and the desktop software will play nice with both Vista and Windows 7. Upgrades will also bring snappy, “touch-first” perusal of your files in a dedicated Windows 8 app and will offer accessibility in other Metro-syle applications should the need arise. The post states that “For app developers, this means that, so long as your app supports opening and saving documents and photos, it will automatically support SkyDrive without any additional work.” Similar to its cloud storage competitor, SkyDrive will also enable remote access via its web site in case you need to “fetch” that presentation on a co-worker’s PC. Still no word on extended storage options / pricing that we’ve heard rumblings about, though. For a closer look at the some of the tweaks, peep the gallery below or hit the source link for more on the particulars.

Update: A video demo now awaits on the other side of the break.

7-inch Eden Tab launches in Japan this weekend, could become the Xiaomi tablet

For those who’ve been keeping an eye on Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun, you should already know that after the Xiaomi Phone’s successful launches (most recently in collaboration with China Telecom), the man’s been pondering over whether the Chinese tablet market is worth tapping into. Funnily enough, it turned out that during CES, Kingsoft’s Japanese subsidiary Mobile In Style announced the 7-inch Eden Tab, which just so happened to be co-developed by Xiaomi and shares the same ODM, Inventec, as the Xiaomi Phone. This is no surprise considering Lei Jun also chairs both Xiaomi and Kingsoft, and the two companies have announced partnerships before; though it doesn’t seem like this tablet uses the former’s MIUI software. Read on to find out more.
